Informed consent is an important part of the medical process, which refers to the approval given by the patient’s family after receiving an explanation from the doctor before surgery is performed. Good communication between doctors and families is essential to ensure that the family understands the patient’s condition and the medical procedures to be undertaken. This study aims to analyze the communication patterns used by doctors in delivering informed consent to patients’ families at RSUP Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Makassar. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive case study approach. Data were collected through interviews with six patient family members, direct observation during the doctor’s explanation of informed consent, and documentation related to the informed consent process. The data were analyzed by summarizing, presenting, and drawing conclusions from the results of interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings show that doctors generally use a patient-centered communication style, placing the patient and their family as active partners in the medical decision-making process. However, in some cases, the communication tends to be one-way or doctor-centered due to time constraints. The use of complex medical terminology also poses a challenge for families to fully understand the information. This study concludes that clear, empathetic, and open communication greatly helps families in performed.
